Hi:
I have to do service authorizations at work. I use a database called Therap, which is normally pretty easy to use. However, whenever I get into the "begin date" or "end date " form fields, they say "read only". When I press enter to enter the field, nothing happens. When I press insert F5 and choose the field, it'll just say "unlabeled" and again, won't let me enter anything. When I turn off my virtual cursor (just tired that out of desperation), Jaws hardly read anything. I've checked with our administrator, and I have priveleges to creat new authorizations. I'm using Internet Explorer 8 or 9, and Jfw 13. I've also tried the above options in Firefox, but with the same results. What other key combinations could I use? Also, If I should use my Jaws cursor, what keystrokes might work to fill in these fields? I've also tried selecting what I type in, and no results. This is so frustrating. I've searched online, and under Jaws help topics. This is the one aspect of my job I'm having trouble with. Any tips would be very much appreciated.
Thanks
without seeing the form it's very difficult to say, but I'd ask someone at your job if there is a calendar of some sort under these fields. Often when a date field is read only, they are looking for you to go down and click something on a calendar. If you can find this out for me, I may have better advice. This is often the way things are done now on reservation sites.
Actually, now that you mention it, I believe there is a calendar I need to select. I'm having trouble doing that. Any idea on how I might do this?
Thanks.

When you navigate your form and hear the calendar does it say clickable. If so find a date any date for this purposeand try space bar aenter, and maybe even insert enter or left mouse click.
Jaws does not read the calendar. The only reason I know it's there is my boss mentioned it. I only get the "read only" field forms. I've tried both left and right mouse clicks and all kinds of spacebar enter insert and shift combinations. Normally, when something says "clickable", I know to press enter. I'm wondering if there isn't another screen reader that might work (can't imagine what that'd be).
Okay, on firefox, I will hear "image calendar clickable" That's mopre than I usually hear. Tried lots of insert commands. Have the left and right mouse buttons changed for Windows 8? Thanks.
No, the buttons haven't changed.
It sounds to me like the scripting on the form/page is set to only accept data from a click on the calendar rather than just allowing you to key the information in. To better determine this, ask a co worker if they are able to manually key in a date or must they pick from the calendar. My guess is, they are unable to type it in, in which case it stops being a screen reader issue, and a problem with the coding in the form.
I am thinking the same. Coding in the form. This is a touch issue to solve if you can't see it.
Send it to freedom Scientific and see what reply you get back is what I'd do.
Okay, how should I send it. Should I send a link to the web page? The information I need to access is pretty confidential and requires a user name log in. I also sent an email to our IT guy at work.
In this case you'll have to ask Freedom Scientific and also your implorer. Jaws won't do everything for you, so this might be one of them, but I'd get permission.
After you have it, yes, you'd send a link, or do a tandom with them so they can see what you see.
I suppose you could contact fs, but as one who worked in high levels of support there for a years, It's not something I'd personally do. I still think for now the starting point needs to see if a sighted colleague can manually key in dates. If they can not, then again the problem is a scripting problem with the site and there's little FS could do for you.
Yes, if she could get someone in the office to help that be ideal, but I suppose that isn't an option?
Point being, if it's a programming flaw, the only thing FS can do for you is affirm this fact. Thus it's still best to know how sighted colleagues are completing this.
Hi, I talked with the Therap administrator and she'll look into the issue. I'm going to lunch with an IT friend next week, so can discuss it with her. I was thinking of getting an I device. I wonder if this would work better. Of course, I wouldn't get one just for this issue, but am curious how it'd work. In your experience, is navigating webpages easier with Voice over, especially with selecting visual objects? I had an Iphone, but didn't get to use it much before I lost it. I'll ask some of my co-workers and see if Therap works with their mobile devices.
No
that last post doesn't make any sense. no what.
Read the question above. Smile. The answer to it is no.
